Therapy: Talking about the cost

One thing I am often asked about therapy, is why it can come at such a cost.

There’s many factors that come into play here, the first part is being self employed. There’s no Tax or National Insurance deductions like you get at when paid by a company. This is done as part of self employment Tax returns.

I often think one of the biggest factors around deciding session fees, is the amount it costs to train as a therapist in the first place. While course fees vary around the UK, it’s fair to say that training can cost thousands of pounds, with no guarantee of any form of employment when qualified.

Then we have to take into account other qualifications and experience, as well as ongoing Continuing Professional Development (CPD) which is ongoing.

Not to forget the regular fees it costs to be a therapist: professional membership fees, registering with the ICO, as well as things like room hire and insurance.

So when i’m asked about the cost of therapy, it’s important to highlight the costs associated with being a therapist, and ensure we value ourselves and our training in setting our fees.
